A social cultural group, Diiv Progressive Agenda (DiPA), has urged the Benue Government to urgently demarcate the boundary between Bonta and Ukpute communities to end the decades-long crisis.
Its President, Dr James Ukpoko, who made the call on Friday at a press conference in Makurdi, said that the demarcation was the only permanent solution to the crisis.
Ukpoko, who spoke through Dr Bruce Iormon, said the crisis, which started in 1997, has left many people killed and property worth hundreds of millions destroyed.
The president commended Gov. Hyacinth Alia for initiating boundary reestablishment efforts, a vital step toward lasting peace.
“We invite the world to note that the ongoing violence against Bonta has created a humanitarian emergency, with hundreds of families displaced, homes destroyed, and children left without shelter.
“We appeal to the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), and international humanitarian organisations to recognise the scale of this crisis and to provide urgent assistance to those affected.
“Bonta families are in dire need of food, shelter, and security, as the continued aggression has left many struggling to survive.
“The humanitarian needs are severe and pressing, requiring coordinated aid to prevent further suffering and displacement.
“The Bonta community has long upheld the values of peace, mutual respect, and resilience.
Today, we stand at a crucial juncture, calling for the world’s attention to our plight,” he said.
He said for decades, Bonta has peacefully coexisted with neighbouring Ukpute without issues until the recent crisis.
According to him, the peace overtures by the people of Bonta and the state government were rejected by the other party.
He said that they rather resorted to false media claims and continued lethal attacks.
“Bonta people, who are deeply rooted in a culture of agriculture and peace, have seen their livelihoods and stability attacked,” he added. NAN
