The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has intensified its crackdown on criminal elements, leading to the arrest of three suspected armed robbers and cultists in Akpautong Village.
The operation, which took place on Feb. 17, also resulted in the recovery of dangerous weapons and stolen items.
A statement issued by the Command’s Spokesman, DSP Timfon John, said a retired Staff Sergeant of the Nigerian Army reported hearing gunfire at 01:20 hours and later identified the suspects.
John gave the names of the suspects to include Saviour Ime Philip, Benjamin Joseph Asuquo, and Simon Monday Ekong.
“The gang allegedly broke into the sergeant’s son’s room, held him at gunpoint, and stole ₦100,000,” he said.
In a separate incident, he revealed, one Daniel Friday Ibiak, was reportedly attacked and robbed of ₦206,000 and ₦10,000 in cash by the same gang.
He added: “But acting on credible intelligence, the police tracked and intercepted the fleeing suspects, arresting three while others escaped.
“The recovered exhibits include: Two cut-size shotguns, Eight machetes, One tricycle, one motorcycle, one generator, assorted charms, various food items, and one television.
“The suspects are believed to be part of a notorious gang of cultists and armed robbers that have been terrorizing neighboring Local Government Areas, ” he said.
John quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed-Azare, of reaffirming the Command’s commitment to rooting out criminal gangs and ensuring public safety in tge state. (ephemeralnews.com.ng)
