A Security expert, Dr Charles Omole, has advised the Federal Government to keep exploring and harnessing the use of technology for effective security and safeguarding the lives and properties of Nigerians
Omole gave the advice while speaking at the 17th Distinguished Public Lecture organised by the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) on Friday.
Speaking on the topic, “Strengthening National Development Through Effective Security in Nigeria, ” Omole expressed gladness that security operations in Nigeria have advanced beyond analogue era.
He said that “Smart surveillance, data-driven policing, and cybersecurity measures can significantly mitigate threats before they escalate into crises, especially resources control, banditry, kidnapping, cybercrimes etc.
“Nigeria’s journey towards sustainable growth necessitates a comprehensive
approach to tackling security challenges.
“Reforming institutions is crucial to ensuring that corruption and inefficiency do not undermine security efforts.
“Good governance must transcend political rhetoric to become a tangible reality, where transparency, rule of law and accountability foster national progress.
“Again, fostering social cohesion is indispensable, because a divided society is an easy target for insecurity, but a united people can withstand and repel threats more effectively.
“This means that investing in education, economic opportunities, and
programmes that bridge ethnic and religious divide, ensur that every Nigerian feels a sense of belonging,”he said.
Omole noted that effective security was not just about addressing immediate threats; but encompasses creating an environment where businesses thrive, investors feel confident, and citizens could go about their daily lives without fear.
According to him, security is the
unsung hero of economic prosperity – the silent partner in every successful
development narrative.
He added: “As Nigeria looks to the future, it must remember: a safe nation is a thriving nation, and a thriving nation secures not only its borders, but also the dreams and aspirations of its people.”
In his remarks, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi, Mr Miller Dantawaye, stressed the importance of security as a fundamental pillar of national development.
Dantawaye also agreed that security creates stable environment for economic growth and investment as well as the overall well-being of its citizens.
“Security contributes to improved living standards as people can focus on their livelihood and developing without the constant threat of violence.
“I hereby appeal to members of the public for their continued collaboration and support to the Police and other security agencies in order to create a safe and secure environment that guarantees economic growth and investment,”the CP said.
