The Commissioner of Police in A’Ibom, Mr Mohammed Azare, on Friday commended a Police officer, who rejected a bribe of N800,000 for the release of a suspect in the State.
The CP gave the commendation through a letter issued to the officer while addressing officers at the end of the month briefing at the police command’s headquarters in Uyo.
The officer, CSP Ebong Thompson, who is in charge of the Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Unit, rejected the N800,000 bribe offered to him on July 30 by a suspect.
A statement signed by the Command’s Spokesman, DSP Timfon John, said the money was intended to secure the release of an armed robbery suspect and also cover up the crime.
“The suspect, David Samuel Isaac, 53, was arrested after a Samsung phone that was gotten at gun point was traced to him. I
“Isaac has a history of similar offences as he was arrested and charged to court for similar crime sometime last year, but returned to criminal activities after his release.
“The suspect (Isaac) had offered the bribe through his friend, Emmanuel Mendie Peter, who was promptly arrested after he brought the bribe to the SWAT office to secure his release.
“Peter has been taken into custody after the offer was rejected,” he said.
John quoted the CP as charging other officers to emulate the distinguished officer, who carried out the discreet investigation.
He, however, warned members of the public to desist from compromising police investigation.
