In its efforts to maintain a peaceful environment, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Benue Command through its Peace and Conflict Resolution (PCR) Unit has resolved 185 civil cases in Benue in one year.
The State Commandant, Mrs Larai Bitrus made this known on Tuesday during the International Day of Peace celebration with the theme, “Act Now for a Peaceful World” in Makurdi.
Bitrus disclosed that 228 cases were reported to the PCR unit between Oct 2024 and Aug 2025 and only 43 were unresolved.
She commended the PCR unit for their deligence and patience with warring parties during the resolution of the cases which had yielded massive results.
The Commandant stated that the Command has been empowered by the NSCDC amended Act, 2007 in Section 3(6) to arrange and mediate in the settlement of disputes among willing members of the public.
“NSCDC remains a key player in community peace through conflict resolution which is in line with the Corps mandate of maintaining law and order, protection of civilian, critical national assets and infrastructure.
“The PCR’s primary objective is to promote peace, stability, and conflict resolution within our communities and I am happy they are doing their job well”, she explained.
Bitrus therefore, urged all stakeholders especially the traditional institutions to renew their commitment to promoting peace, tolerance and understanding.
She said every Benue person must work together to address root causes of conflicts, foster dialogue and build bridges across divides in order to all the unnecessary communal clashes.
Also speaking, the head of PCR unit, Mr Augustine Arumona commended the Commandant for granting them the freedom to resolve civil cases without interferences.
Aromona said the unit has achieved significantly in maintaining and promoting Peace within Makurdi and other parts of Benue.
He said they have resolved 91 marital/family cases, three communal conflict incidents, seven land related cases, six farmers/herders conflict incidents.
Other resolved cases according to Arumona were 20 tenancy disagreements, 66 breach of contract/indebtedness, 18 interpersonal, three religion/believe incidents and 14 others.
Arumona urged the general public to always approach the PCR unit of NSCDC to resolve their conflicts instead of resorting to violence, saying that there is no alternative to peace. NAN
