The Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, has inaugurated several key civil-military cooperation projects in Otampe Oklenyi Community, Okpokwu Local Government Area of Benue.
Abbas inaugurated a newly built three-classroom block, staff room, and renovated five classrooms and latrine convenience on Tuesday at Otampe Oklenyi Primary School, Okpaga, Okpokwu LGA.
The CNS, who was represented by the Command Operations Officer of the Nigerian Navy Special Operations Command, Commodore Maksum Mohammed, said that the projects were executed through the CNS Special Intervention Quick Impact Project Scheme in honour of Real Admiral Robert Obeya.
He explained that the special quick intervention projects were initiated in 2024 as part of the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of local communities across the country.
He expressed his gratitude for being part of the commissioning event and acknowledged the importance of civil-military cooperation, which aimed to foster harmonious relationships between the military and civil society to achieve shared objectives.
He said that the execution of such impactful projects contributed to the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“These projects are a testament to the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to serving the interests of Nigerians beyond our primary role of securing lives and property,” Abbas said.
The Special Guest of Honour, who is the Deputy Governor of Benue, Sam Ode, praised the invaluable contribution of Rear Admiral Obeya and the Nigerian Navy to the development of the community.
Represented by the Otukpo Local Government Chairman, Mr Maxwell Ogiri, Ode highlighted how the projects would leave a lasting legacy for the children of Otampe Oklenyi, providing them with better access to education and a brighter future.
“I stand here today to acknowledge the immeasurable value of these projects. Our children now have the opportunity to learn in a more comfortable and conducive environment.
“This is a priceless gift, and we must all work together to ensure its sustainability,” Ode said.
He also lauded Gov. Hyacinth Alia’s administration for its support of the initiative, emphasising that the state government was committed to ensuring that schools were comfortable and conducive for learning.
He reiterated that the administration’s focus on infrastructural development would continue, addressing the gaps that had long plagued rural communities.
In his address of welcome, Obeya expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to give back to his community.
He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Nigerian Navy, local authorities, and the Benue Government in making the projects a reality.
He reaffirmed his commitment to further supporting educational and infrastructural development in the area.
“The completion of this project is just the beginning. In the coming months and years, I intend to sponsor more projects in this community, including the provision of water, electricity, and other essential services that will improve the lives of the people,” Obeya said.
He also urged the beneficiaries to take good care of the facilities and use them responsibly so that they can continue to serve future generations.
He emphasised the importance of education as a powerful tool for empowerment, urging them to equip themselves to better their lots.
The Och’ Okpoga, Joseph Agbo, also voiced his appreciation for the projects and praised Obeya for his selfless service to his fatherland.
