Some medical doctors in Nigeria have tasked their Nigerian counterparts abroad to invest in medical charity in their various communities in Nigeria.
They made the call at a one day Medical Outreach on Monday in Nnebukwu, Oguta Local Government Area of Imo state.
The outreach, which holds annually during the yuletide, is organised by medical doctors and illustrious sons of the community as a way of touching lives in their communities.
Addressing newsmen shortly before takeoff of the event, Dr Ifeomasinachi Chukwuma- Ogbonna said the profession is a compassionate one, hence the need to reach out to the less privileged, especially during the yuletide.
She reiterated the need for well meaning Nigerians, including doctors to continue to assist governments in providing succour for the downtrodden
Chukwuma-Ogbonna, who is a Romania trained medical doctor, explained that governments alone cannot provide all the medical care needed for citizens, adding that there is need for those well off to assist occasionally.
“Medical care is expensive all over the world, outreaches of this natured require concerted efforts by all concerned in providing both free consultations, advice, surgeries, laboratory tests and medications among others.
Also speaking, Dr Fine Uzoka- Akubueze said that over 500 people received the free medicare from the outreach.
Akubueze, who is a medical practitioner based in Port Harcourt, Rivers, said it remained a delight to give to society.
“Some of the cases we have seen today are minor while those requiring more medical attention has been referred.
Mrs Nnepma Okonkwo, an Optometrist based in Saudi Arabia, said she was particularly happy that the cases treated did not require surgery.
“We came ready for all cases but we are happy that the severe ones are those requiring just glasses for eye correction.
“We gave out drugs and supplements that will aid in clearer eye sights to the people as well as advise for sustainance.
“The team provided drugs that will run for months for most of the patients as well as glasses and other care where necessary.
According to her, the group is so happy with the turnout of residents, especially children and will continue to expand the outreach both got services by involving many more consultants in different fields and proving more drugs.
The 2025 outreach, which held at the Nnebukwu town hall, is especially sponsored by Mr Desmond Okonkwo, an engineer and illustrious son of the town.
It featured free blood pressure and blood sugar tests.
It also conducted free eye tests and gave out glasses, held health education as well as free treatments for various diagnosed ailments.
The outreach also include nurses, lab technicians and doctors in other fields.
