In politics generally, there is always a difference between slogans of the campaign trail and the reality when winners get into the Government House.
Sloganeering is easy; it is rhythmic, filled with the metaphors of “New Dawns” and “Renewed Hopes.” But the prose of governance is stubborn. It is written in the language of functioning hospitals, balanced ledgers, and institutional stability.
In Abia State, the prose has lately been looking like a chaotic first draft, riddled with “typographical errors” that no amount of political white-out can fix.
Governor Alex Otti entered the stage with the aura of a technocrat who had the magic wand to push out the “old Abia” into the shadows of history. Yet, months into his stay in office, the audience is noticing that while the lighting and the stage design (the social media branding) are impeccable, the actual script is falling apart.
If governance were merely an exercise in public relations, Governor Otti would be a titan. But the reality of Abia’s administration has been defined by a series of bewildering somersaults.
We have watched, with a mix of amusement and concern, as the administration defended billions of Naira in “accounting errors” regarding office renovations and refreshments.
When a government spends more on the comfort of the few while the many languish in the shadow of dilapidated infrastructure, it isn’t just an error; it is an epiphany. It reveals an administration that is perhaps more comfortable with the aesthetics of power than the mechanics of it.
You can defend a ₦1.5 billion refreshment budget with a clever press release, but you cannot “PR” your way through a medical crisis. And that brings us to the litmus test of any administration: its institutions.
The Abia State University Teaching Hospital (ABSUTH), is not a political billboard. It is a living, breathing (and currently gasping) institution. It does not respond to slogans. It does not care for “New Abia” hashtags. It responds only to competence.
Since Otti became governor, the hospital has been a shadow of its potential; a victim of leadership gaps that have become too wide to ignore. In a move that caught many by surprise but, perhaps should have been expected,
Governor Otti recently looked across the political aisle. He didn’t look toward his inner circle of loyalists or the noisy echo chambers of his party. He looked toward the household of his most formidable political rival: the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu – he appointed Dr. Ezinne Chinyere Benjamin-Kalu as the Chairman of the Management Board of ABSUTH.
For most political observers, this is a fascinating study in political irony. It is a public admission, written in the ink of necessity, that when the chips are down and the stakes are human lives, the Governor’s own “technocratic” house was found wanting.
Why the Kalu household? The answer is as simple as it is uncomfortable for the current administration: Because capacity is not a partisan commodity. While the Otti administration has been busy navigating the minefields of its own making, fighting off accusations of fiscal indiscretion and administrative inertia, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Kalu has been quietly running a different kind of workshop.
Kalu has built a brand defined not by noise, but by results. His trajectory in the Green Chamber has been marked by legislative discipline and a rare ability to build institutions rather than just cults of personality. He has mentored a cadre of leaders who understand that power is a tool for service, not a trophy for display.
By reaching out to Dr. Ezinne Benjamin-Kalu, a seasoned professional whose medical and administrative pedigree is beyond reproach, Otti is essentially waving a white flag. He is acknowledging that the “New Abia” cannot be built by amateurs in fancy suits. It requires the kind of “Old School” competence and institutional DNA that the Kalu family represents.
This is more than just a bipartisan gesture; it is a rescue mission. Dr. Ezinne Benjamin-Kalu isn’t just filling a vacancy; she is lending the “Kalu Standard” to an administration that is currently struggling to find its feet. It creates a striking contrast. On one hand, you have a Governor struggling with the basics of budget transparency and administrative coherence. On the other, you have a “Power Couple” who are already defining the future of the state through sheer capacity.
Benjamin Kalu stabilizes the national legislative front, while Ezinne Benjamin-Kalu is brought in to stabilize the state’s premier medical institution.
The message to Abians is clear: If the current government trusts the Rt Hon. Benjamin Kalu brand to fix the most broken parts of the state, perhaps the state should start looking at where the real leadership resides. There is an old saying that you do not go to your rival for help unless your own well has run dry. Governor Otti’s well has not just run dry; it appears to have been contaminated by the very “business as usual” politics he claimed to end.
By appointing Dr. Ezinne, Otti has inadvertently enrolled in a masterclass. He has admitted that while he may hold the title of Governor, the “Dean” of the school of effective governance in Abia is currently sitting in the Deputy Speaker’s chair of the National Assembly in Abuja.
The Kalus are no longer just participating in the conversation about Abia’s future; through this appointment, they have become the answer to its present failures. In the end, slogans may win elections, but only substance can save states. And for now, the substance is coming from the house across the street.
We thank Gov. Otti for admitting what we’ve always known: The Benjamin Kalu brand is the gold standard for Abia’s future. The challenge is accepted. Let’s show them how it’s done. Consider this appointment a free trial of what 2027 looks like.
We are giving the Governor a taste of the Kalu excellence. If he likes it this much now, he’ll love it when we take over fully. If the Governor, an opponent, is so impressed by the capacity
within the Kalu family that he seeks their help to govern, imagine what that same capacity will do when given the full mandate of the State.
Indeed, Gov Otti has admitted the quality in the Kalus, all he needs is to take the next step – give Abia to the Kalus to bring quality governance to this golden State.
