The winner and runners-up of the Seyi Tinubu Basketball Tournament held in Jos collectively pocketed N5 million and gift items.
The Dogon Dutse Warriors triumphed in a nail-biting 32-30 final over the Tudun Wada Lakers carted away N3 million while runners-up went home with N2 million.
Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, said that the tournament was aimed at promoting unity, fostering youth development, and strengthening community bonds in Plateau.
Seyi Tinubu, who was represented by Auwal Ibrahim, expressed satisfaction with the successful hosting of the tournament and the impact it has had on the local community.
“Plateau is gradually regaining its former glory as the home of peace and tourism, and this tournament is a testament to the potential of the region.
“We must all continue to work together to sustain this progress. Sports, as we have seen today, are an incredible unifying factor and can help build bridges in our society.
“The tournament is in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda of unifying the nation through sports and youth inclusiveness.
“The tournament is just one example of how sports could serve as a catalyst for positive change in Nigeria,” he added.
“This event highlights the importance of sports in fostering national unity and youth empowerment,” he added.
Mallo Bokkos, Dogon Dutse Warriors Manager, expressed his joy and pride in the team’s hard-earned victory.
“This win is a result of the hard work and dedication of every single player on this team.
“We’ve been working toward this moment for a long time, and to see it finally come to fruition is an incredible feeling,” he said.
The Assistant Captain, Tudun Wada Lakers, Ramatu Diallo, received the runners-up prize on behalf of her team with grace and pride.
“It’s disappointing to come so close to victory, but we gave it our best.
“This competition has taught us valuable lessons, and we’ll be back next year, stronger and more determined,” Diallo said.
Sanusi Adam, a local resident and spectator, commended Seyi Tinubu for organising such a successful tournament in Jos.
Adam said that the tournament was exactly what the youth needed to showcase their talents and come together as one.
“By bringing everyone together in the spirit of competition and sportsmanship, Seyi Tinubu has given us something to be proud of,” he said.
The tournament also highlighted the remarkable individual performances of Cyril Olajide and Pam Edward, who were both recognised as the best players of the competition.
Olajide, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), was lauded for his exceptional leadership on the court, while Edward stood out for her all-around performance, contributing significantly to the Warriors’ victory.
“It’s an honour to receive this recognition, and I’m proud of my teammates for making this possible,” Olajide said after receiving his award.
