The Rotary club of Jos, has built 6 toilet units in St Paul Township Primary school Jos, as a means of improving hygiene, sanitation and combating open defecation.
Mr Frank Igboanugo, President, Rotary Club of Jos, on Tuesday in Jos, said that the club was focusing on one of its thematic areas of health, hygiene, and sanitation and saw a need for the construction of toilets in the school.
Igboanugo stated that the toilets and hand dug well were provided to improve the hygiene, sanitation, and wellbeing of the pupils and staff of the school as prior to the construction of the toilets the school had only one toilet for both pupils and members of staff.
The president, stated that the toilets would help prevent the practice of open defecation, while the hand dug well constructed by the club at the school would provide water for the maintenance of the toilets.
According to him, the act of open defecation was unhealthy and would foster the spread of diseases.
Similarly, Mr Mike Ukachi, District Governor, District 9127 of Rotary International, said the gesture was to address the challenge of grossly inadequate toilet facilities in the school which encouraged the act of open defecation.
Ukachi, who was represented by Dr Samuel Komolafe, the Zonal Coordinator of rotary district 9127, commended the president and members of the rotary club of Jos for their financial donations for the construction of the toilets and the hand dug well.
He urged the staff and pupils of the school to ensure they utilised the toilets properly.
Earlier, Mrs Angela Sambo, head teacher of St. Paul’s Township primary school, commended the club for the laudable gesture.
Sambo said that the toilets would help boost the sanitary condition of the pupils and staff.
She assured the club that the toilets would be utilised properly.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the club also provided cartons of toilet rolls, buckets, detergent and liquid soap to the school for effective maintenance of the toilets. NAN
