The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has received a total of 129 applications from associations seeking registration as political parties.
Mr Sam Olumekun, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, who disclosed this on Thursday said this update came after the Commission received seven additional applications since last week.
“In a bid to streamline the registration process, INEC is introducing a new political party registration portal, which is a module of the Party Financial Reporting and Auditing System (PFRAS).
‘The portal is expected to make the process faster and more seamless.”
The Commission, he said, is set to conclude the final testing of the portal within the next week, after which guidelines will be issued to facilitate the filing of applications.
According to him, the associations that meet the requirements will be notified of the next steps in the application process.
He said that the list of new associations has been uploaded to INEC’s website and other platforms for public information.
The commissioner said that the effort is aimed at enhancing transparency and efficiency in the political party registration process.
He stressed that the development marks another step in INEC’s efforts to regulate and oversee the registration of political parties in Nigeria.
