The Benue Chapter of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) on Friday honoured Prof. Tor Iorapuu, Vice Chancellor (VC), Fr. Adasu University Makurdi with award of excellence.
The state Chairman, Ben Ojobo said in Makurdi that the society honoured him for his outstanding contributions to PSN and the growth of pharmacy profession in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that Fr Adasu University, Makurdi was formerly Benue State University, Makurdi.
Ojobo said that the VC saw to the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the university.
He explained that since the creation of the state in 1976, Benue citizens bored the risk and other challenges of traveling all over the country to study the course.
He said the situation had also contributed to the dearth of lecturers in the department and pharmacists in the state.
Ojobo said with the introduction of the faculty, the state would now have enough pharmacists to meet the needs of the citizens.
Iorapuu appealed to members of PSN and other relevant stakeholders in the state to support the new faculty.
Iorapuu said there must be deliberate attempt to prepare the students for the faculty right in the secondary schools level to function effectively.
He also urged the government to establish pure science secondary schools in the state.
“Aside the establishment of Faculty of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences, we also established the faculty of architecture and engineering.
“The establishment of the faculties was to enable the university compete favourably with other leading universities in the country.
“This is my last month in office, it will be very painful and disgraceful if this faculties fail to meet the desired effect in the long run,” he said
He commended the Visitor of the university, Senate and the entire university community for their various contributions during the process that led to the establishment of the new faculties. (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)
