President of the Uyo Badminton Club 2020, Idongesit Ikono, on Sunday, said that sports remain a powerful tool for building character and strengthening bonds among citizens.
Ikono said this in his closing remarks at the grand finale of the club’s 2025 In-House Badminton Competition and end of year activities in Uyo.
He said that the annual competition had not only improved participants’ technical skills, but has also deepened friendships and fostered unity among members.
“You have entertained us, inspired us, and reminded us why sports remain a powerful tool for building character and strengthening bonds.
“This competition has not only improved our technical skills but has also deepened friendships and fostered unity among members.
“As we celebrate, let us remember that the ultimate goal of this club is not only to win medals but to promote healthy living, mutual respect, and continuous personal development.
“I encourage all members to remain active, disciplined, and supportive of one another as we look forward to even greater competitions in the future.” he said.
The club president expressed willingness to partner with other stakeholders to promote the game of badminton in Akwa Ibom.
Ikono said that in addition to encouraging participation of its members in local and international tournaments, the club has also continued to partner other clubs, and encouraged the formation of new ones.
He noted that the event was not just the culmination of days of intense rallies and competitive matches, but a celebration of sportsmanship, unity, discipline, and the enduring spirit of the club and game.
“From the very first serve to this final showdown, we have witnessed remarkable skill, determination, and resilience from all our participants.
“Each player who stepped onto the court represented the true values of badminton, respect, fair play, perseverance, and excellence.
“Win or lose, every competitor here is a champion for daring to compete and for upholding the honour of our club,” he said.
Ikono commended the organisers and volunteers who worked behind the scenes to ensure the competition was successful and professionally conducted.
He lauded the players for their sacrifices and efforts which he said had inspired others and sustained the ideals of badminton in particular and sports in general.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition featured games in different categories including; the men singles, women singles, men doubles, women doubles, and mixed doubles.
