The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kogi State on Wednesday organised a special Easter rally on safe driving and preservation of lives on the highways.
The FRSC Sector Commander, Mr Stephen Dawulung, described the rally at Lokoja Mega Terminal (LMT) as “very crucial and timely”, considering the volume of highway traffic during Easter period.
He explained that the rally was in line with the mandate of the corps to engage in robust public enlightenment towards the reduction of road traffic crashes by five per cent as stipulated in the 2023 Corporate Strategic Goals.
He said the essence of the special rally was to ensure safety of lives and property of both drivers and commutters.
The theme of the exercise was: “Avoid speed, overloading and night journeys while observing 30 minutes rest after every four hours drive.”
“The rally focused on the sensitisation of motorists, especially during the Easter festivities towards taking necessary and proactive measures to enhance their individual and collective safety.
This would “forestall the risks of being involved in road traffic crashes, motorists, especially commercial drivers who should
avoid night journeys due to poor visibility and fatigue.
“We also expect them to observe rest periods of 30 minutes after every four hours drive to ward off fatigue and sleep;
avoid speed, to be in control of the vehicle and avoid overloading, to enhance stability and durability of components of the vehicle, ” he said.
Responding, the Secretary, Kogi NURTW Branch, Alhaji A. Abubakar, thanked the Sector Commander and his staff for the sensitisation of drivers and pledged the union’s continuous support to the command towards achieving a safe travel environment in Kogi State and beyond.
