The Wife of Plateau Gov. Caleb Mutfwang, Mrs Helen Mutfwang, has called for community support networks for breastfeeding mothers
Mrs Mutfwang made the call at a ceremony to mark the World Breast Feeding Week, and World Breast Feeding Record Attempt in Jos, on Thursday.
The governor’s wife, who was represented by the Plateau Chairperson, Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission, Mrs Olivia Dazyem, said breast feeding should not be a solitary endeavour.
“Mothers should have support from community support groups, peer counselors and local organisations,“ said the governor’s wife.
She added that the support would provide invaluable assistance to breastfeeding mothers, as well as serve as a source of encouragement,
Mrs Mutfwang said the support would also offer a space for breastfeeding mothers to share experiences, seek advice, and receive emotional support from others who understand their challenges.
She said that the theme for this years breast feeding week “ Closing the Gap Breastfeeding Support for All” was apt as it would give every child equal start in life through breast feeding.
She said the support would create an environment where breastfeeding would be celebrated and normalised.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that three breastfeeding mothers were awarded with various gift items for exclusively breastfeeding their children for up to six months.
Mrs Mutfwang said that closing the gap and achieving breastfeeding support for all, would require concerted efforts from all sectors. NAN
