The Akwa-Ibom State Police Command says it will from Feb. 2 commence enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance across the state.
Alhaji Baba Azare, the State Commissioner of Police, disclosed this in a statement issued in Uyo on Friday.
He explained that directivewas in compliance with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, as emphasized by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun.
Azare said: “The enforcement exercise aims to protect road users, ensure accountability, and promote compliance with traffic laws.
“Vehicle owners are required to possess valid third-party insurance before operating their vehicles on public roads.
“Failure to comply will result in the seizure of vehicles, which will only be released upon presentation of valid insurance documents.”
According to him, the Command has warned officers participating in the enforcement to avoid unprofessional conduct, particularly extortion, which will attract severe disciplinary action.
The CP urged vehicle owners to ensure compliance with this legal obligation to avoid inconveniences.
He stressed that the policy comes as the Nigeria Police Force, under IGP Egbetokun, intensifies efforts to enforce compulsory insurance policies, including third-party motor insurance. (ephemeralnews.com.ng)
