The Akwa Ibom State Police Command on Monday says it has arrested a 32-year-old Ndifreke Isaiah-Nelson for allegedly murdering his girlfriend, 39-year-old Emem Monday Effang.
Thw suspect was alleged to have stolen his victim’s mobile phone after committing the dastardly act.
The Command’s Spokesman, DSP Timfon John, in a statement signed in Uyo, said that Emem’s body was found in her apartment in February 2025, with visible marks of violence on her face and neck, suggesting she had been strangled and beaten to death.
John said that nvestigations revealed that Ndifreke was the last person seen with Effang, and he was tracked down to a church in Uyo, where he attempted to escape but was apprehended.
He said that during interrogation, Ndifreke confessed to visiting Effang on the morning of his birthday and demanding to use her phone to take pictures for his birthday celebration on social media.
“Bit that when she refused, a struggle ensued, and he overpowered her, strangled her, and struck her head on the floor.
“The police recovered Effang’s phone, an Itel Super Phone, from Ndifreke during his arrest.
“A post-mortem examination has been conducted, and the cause of death has been officially documented, ” he said..
According to him, the suspect will be charged to court soonest.
He quoted the and the State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed-Azare, of assuring that justice would be done on the matter.
Mohammed-Azare, however, warned against domestic violence and criminal acts, urging the public to remain security conscious and report suspicious activities to the police. (ephemeralnews.com.ng)
