The President, Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Prof. Mathew Adamu, has urged all professionals in the livestock sector to imbibe the spirit of unity and collaboration rather than competition.
Adamu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the sideline of the maiden edition of the Benue State Livestock Summit in Makurdi.
The president emphasised the need for all hands to be on deck for the livestock industry to thrive.
He said that with unity of purpose, all the challenges facing the industry would be surmounted and the potentials effectively harnessed.
Adamu lauded the Minister of Livestock Development, Alh. Idi Maiha, for his tireless efforts to uplift the livestock sector.
The president particularly commended the minister’s efforts to ensure that the council returned to government funding.
He said that the gesture would no doubt aid the council in carrying out its functions of regulating the practice and supporting the ministry to succeed.
“We are grateful to the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for creating the Ministry of Livestock Development.
“I commend Gov. Hyacinth Alia of Benue for creating the Bureau for Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Diseases Control and for supporting the initiative of the maiden livestock summit.
“I am optimistic that at the end of the summit, far-reaching decisions on how to develop the sector will be arrived at,” he said.
NAN reports that the theme of the two-day livestock summit is “Reimagining the Future of Livestock Production in Nigeria for Economic Growth and Self-Sufficiency”.
The summit featured a panel discussion with the Minister for Livestock Development, Alh. Idi Mukhtar Maiha; the DG Bureau for Livestock Development and Transboundary Animal Diseases Control, Dr Aondoakaa Asambe; and the National Secretary of the Animal Science Association, Prof. David Shaahu, as panellists.
