The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Akwa Ibom Command says it has commenced operation shark smile as strategic measures to curb road crashes in the State.
The Sector Commander, Mrs Felicia Kalu, disclosed this in a statement in Uyo on Monday.
Kalu said operation shark smile was a strategic intervention operation initiative of FRSC Zone 6 aimed at clamping down on observed increasing trend in road traffic crashes.
She said the operation was the corps resolve to bring sanity on the roads, and also determined to stop all road traffic infractions and violations through deliberate intervention enforcement.
“The special enforcement seeks to focus on the critical offences commonly committed and violated in the State, and shall run simultaneously with the Unit Commands.
“The Operation will be in collaboration with relevant sister security agencies, while ensuring immediate prosecution of violators of road traffic offences, or option of payment of prescribed fines,” Kalu said.
According to her, the target offences to focus on during the special enforcement include, but not limited to; overloading and mix-loading.
Other offences targeted include; number plate violations, dangerous/reckless driving/riding, tyre violation, use of phone while driving, speed limit violations and seat belts use violation, among others.
Kalu stated that the special patrol operation was due to its exigency, and the need to ensure the safety of all road users as well as further deter intending offenders against any act of recklessness behind the wheels.
The sector commander said there would be effective and adequate route coverage, while increasing visibility of FRSC presence on the highways during the operation.
She urged the public to remain active and avoid any form of recklessness capable of jeopardising the safety of oneself and other road users.
The sector commander charged road users to ensure adherence to traffic rules and regulations and promptly report any road incidence and other emergencies to the FRSC Toll-free line – 122.
