Beyond its ceremonial value, the gesture reflects the nation’s collective memory and appreciation of Buhari’s contributions, especially to the educational and security development of the North-East.
Muhammadu Buhari, who served as the military governor of the then North Eastern State, played a key role in the establishment of the University of Maiduguri in 1975. At a time when educational infrastructure was scarce in the region, Buhari’s foresight and determination gave birth to an institution that would go on to serve millions, becoming a centre of learning and research across the Sahel.
