The President of Rotary Club of Naraguta in Jos, Mrs Virginia Jang, says 110 girls from the Government Secondary School (GSS) Du, have benefitted from the club’s menstrual hygiene project.
Jang, who made this known on Friday in Jos ahead of the World Menstrual Hygiene Day, said that the menstrual hygiene project is imperative to teach, educate the girl -child on menstrual hygiene .
NAN reports that day is observed every year on May 28 across the globe to raise awareness regarding the onset of menstruation and menstrual hygiene.
She said the club gave out disposable sanitary towels, bath soaps and toilet bags for the 110 girls.
”We dimmed it fit, to bring a menstrual hygiene coach to educate the girls more on their sanitary hygiene and on how to make, use and maintain the reusable sanitary towels to ensure that they are not constrained during their periods if they do not have the disposable towels.
” The knowledge the girls gained from the skill of making their own reusable pads would also ensure that they are not constrained during their monthly periods, if they do not have access to disposable sanitary towels,” she said.
She enjoined the girls to pay rapt attention during the session handled by the menstrual hygiene coach.
The principal of the GSS, Mr Alex Dung, commended Rotary club of Naraguta, for the laudable gesture which he described as ‘material and knowledge based for the girl – child’.
A junior student of the school, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) commended Rotary club of Naraguta for their gesture.
She said the session has empowered her with knowledge as it concerns her menstrual hygiene and she is no longer frightened to see her period when it eventually starts.
The school’s head girl, Miss Patience Nyam, thanked the club for their gesture.
Nyam said she wouldn’t be constrained due to the nonavailability of disposable sanitary towels any time her monthly menstrual period commences as she has learnt the skill of making her own reusable sanitary towels.
She said this skill would also help reduce the financial pressure she places on her parents monthly for the purchase of disposable sanitary towels and the learnt skill would remain with her for life. NAN
