Two Non Governmental Organizations, Renew Our World Campaign Nigeria and TEAR Fund in collaboration with the Plateau Environment Protection and Sanitation Agency( PEPSA), on Saturday, held a sensitization walk and a cleaning exercise in Jos Metropolis.
Mr Monday Atuboko, the team lead of Renew Our World Campaign Nigeria, Plateau chapter, said the essence of the exercise was to create awareness on the importance of waste management and the need for a clean society.
Atuboko, said the move was one of the strategies of enlightening the citizenry on proper waste management and the conversion of waste to wealth through waste sorting .
In his remarks, Mr Promise Alawo, from TEAR Fund, said the walk was to create awareness and to sensitise the people on the need to take responsibility for their waste by putting an end to indiscriminate dumping of waste across the metropolis.
Alawo, said it was important for the government of Plateau and its citizens to work together for a waste free state.
Mr Samuel Dapiya, the Director – General (D-G) of PEPSA, commended the NGOs for collaborating with the Agency on sanitizing the citizenry on the importance of waste management and cleanliness.
Dapiya, said the cleaning exercise was to demostrate to the citizenry, practical ways of keeping their environment waste free.
He said the state government would soon commence the recycling of waste to reusable materials, which would help boost its Internally Generated Revenue in the process of keeping the state clean.
Mr Okey Okoro, a trader at the Jos Terminus Market, commended the organizers for the awareness and the clean up exercise.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exercise commenced from the Old Airport Junction and ended at the Terminus Market .
NAN further reports that the D-G of the Agency , the team leads of the NGOs, corps members, associates and volunteers participated in the cleaning exercise which particularly targeted plastic and polythene waste. NAN
