Mrs Fatima Suleiman, the Resource Person of Mercy Corps, an NGO, funded by USAID, has trained more than 500 women on conflict management and peace building in Barikin-Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau.
Suleiman disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Jos.
She added that the training was designed to build the capacity of rural women and promote their engagement in peace building process at the grassroots.
She explained that the trainees were exposed to conflict management, communication and peace building techniques during the training.
The resource person said the aim was to promote women engagement in conflict management and peace building through effective awareness creation activities.
She said the effective participation of women in peace building process would help in conflict control and foster peace building in the area and the state at large.
Suleiman added that the organisation had initiated various programmes to empower women in the state through a peace project.
The resource person said that the project, Community Initiatives to Promote Peace ended by checking the success rate and sustainability plan in the various communities
She said the organisation used one day for each local government to help bring them together in a meeting to discuss sustainability of the project.
“We want to ensure collaboration and a firm synergy with government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure continuity of the project.
“We brought the government agencies, various community structures and relevant stakeholders together in a meeting to discuss way forward,” she said. NAN
