Mr Miller Dantawaye, Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, has charged senior police officers to maintain focus, discipline, and innovation in their security operations across the state.
He made the call during a Command-Wide Strategic Conference on Wednesday at the Police Headquarters in Lokoja.
In a statement signed by SP Williams Ovye-Aya, the command’s spokesman, Dantawaye emphasised the need for professionalism, operational efficiency, accountability, and intelligence-led policing.
“As Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders, you must uphold discipline, professionalism, precision in patrol formations, civility in public interactions, and intelligence-driven operations,” he said.
He challenged officers to shift from reactive policing to preventive and community-friendly strategies.
The CP warned against indiscriminate arrests, prolonged detention for minor offences, and the misuse of police powers, especially at checkpoints and public spaces.
Reiterating the Inspector General of Police’s directive, he stressed that any division found violating the rules would face sanctions.
Dantawaye called for strict enforcement of discipline at all command levels, noting that discipline was the foundation of effective policing.
He underscored the importance of tactical coordination, proper conduct during operations, and the urgent need to rebuild public trust through ethical law enforcement.
Furthermore, he urged Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to take personal responsibility for their units’ performance, promising ongoing unscheduled visits to ensure compliance with ethical standards.
At the conference, Dr Joe Wealth, a renewable energy expert from AFP Consult, delivered a lecture on “The Role of Solar Power in Strengthening Security Infrastructure.”
He advocated for the integration of solar-powered street lighting and backup power systems into police stations, especially in remote and high-risk areas, to ensure 24/7 visibility and uninterrupted operations, linking improved lighting to crime reduction.
