This was contained in a statement signed by the agency’s Assistant General Manager (AGM), Corporate Affairs, Suleiman Makama, in Lagos on Saturday.

Mr Makama said that the acting Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of NIWA, Umar Girei, received the award at the Award/Dinner Night 2025 of the New Telegraph newspaper.

He said that Mr Girei dedicated the award to the hardworking staff of the authority and the former managing director, Bola Oyebamiji.

He stated, “The award is a testament of the authority’s dedication and commitment to improving maritime safety in Nigeria and will spur the staff to do more.

“It is a recognition of NIWA’s efforts to promote safety and security on Nigerian inland waterways, including the implementation of the inland waterways transportation code.

“It is also in the deployment of water marshals to enforce safety regulations amongst many other achievements in 2025.”

Earlier, while presenting the award to NIWA acting Managing Director, Chief Solo Akuma, a director of the board of New Telegraph newspaper, said that agency has lived up to its obligation.

Akuma explained that the Agency merited the award following the number of lives of travellers across the inland waterways in the country. (Ephemeralnews.com.ng)
