The Rotary Club of Utan in Jos has distributed delivery kits, drugs, and other items to pregnant women in Angwan Rogo Community in Jos, Plateau.
The president of the club, Ejike Obene, said the gesture was to reduce child and maternal mortality rates in the state.
Obene stated that the project, which was in commemoration of rotary maternal and child health month, was also aimed at sensitising pregnant women to some basic health tips.
The president further said that the initiative was to help less-privileged expectant mothers deliver their babies safely.
According to him, the choice of community is deliberate, as it is populated by low income earners, who are in dire need of basic healthcare.
“We brought some delivery kits and other items like mosquito nets, buckets, detergents, and many others that they need even in their homes before and after birth.
“We also brought drugs that mothers need as they are expecting their babies,” he said.
A health expert, Mr Mohammed Sani, who gave a health talk, encouraged the women to enroll in antenatal care and always take their routine medication as prescribed by their physicians.
Sani told pregnant women to ensure that they gave birth to their babies in hospitals instead doing so at home.
He sensitised the women to the dangers of relying on local birth attendants, who might expose them and their children to infections.
“We are encouraging breastfeeding mothers to ensure that they properly and constantly breastfeed their babies and ensure you take all the immunisations.
“Always take your children to health facilities for necessary checkups,” he advised.
The former president of the club, Mr Alexsunny Umeh, said that the intervention was to ensure a healthy society.
Umeh urged the women to take their health seriously and use the items donated for the good of their children.
The Officer in Charge, Angwan Rogo Primary Health Centre, Mr Mohammed Ishaka, thanked the club for choosing the centre for the intervention.
