The Federal Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Nigerian Cancer Society, has intensified the fight against cancer by creating an awareness campaign and free screening for 1,000 persons in Jos.
Dr Maurice Nandul, Chairman, Nigerian Cancer Society (NSC), Plateau branch, made the disclosure on Tuesday in Jos at a sensitisation rally.
Nandul said that the essence of the sensitisation rally was to raise awareness on the importance of early detection of the disease.
The chairman stated that the initiative of the NSC was to raise awareness of the disease and encourage people to avail themselves for the free screening, which was crucial for early diagnosis, timely treatment, and ultimately reducing mortality.
According to him, the free screening of 1,000 persons would commence on Wednesday at the Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH).
He explained that the screening would be conducted for breast cancer, cervical cancer and prostate cancer.
Similarly, Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, said the society was currently raising the sum of N100 billion to support survivors, state governments and cancer centres in the fight against the disease.
Omonisi, who was represented by Prof. Danladi Bojude, National Secretary General of NCS, commended the state government for its immense support to the society.
