The Maritime Academy of Nigeria (MAN), Oron, Akwa Ibom, has received the Integrated Management System (IMS) certifications.
The ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 21001:2025 certifications were presented to the academy’s management in Oron on Tuesday.
In his remarks, the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Dr Adegboryega Oyetola, congratulated the management of the academy for the feat.
Oyetola described the recognition as a reward for excellence, quality assurance and environmental sustainability.
Represented by Mr John Ogwuche, a Deputy Director in the Ministry, Oyetola said that the certification was a reflection of the institution’s adherence to international standards and best practices.
“The acquisition of the Integrated Management System certification is a demonstration of commitment to excellence, quality assurance, environmental sustainability, occupational health and safety standards.
“This certification, facilitated by the SON underscores the academy’s adherence to internationally recognised standards and best practices.
“It reflects a strong culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and operational efficiency which are indispensable in today’s highly competitive and safety-conscious maritime industry,” he said.
Oyetola commended SON for its unwavering dedication to the promotion of standardisation and quality assurance across sectors.
The minister pledged to support initiatives that would strengthen institutional standards in the academy and the maritime industry at large.
Presenting the certificates, SON Director-General, Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, said that the certification was a demonstration of the academy’s commitment to quality and operational efficiency.
Okeke said that the ISO 9001:2015 is a globally accepted framework for improving organisational processes and strengthening operational control
“The successful certification of the academy to ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 21001:2025 standards is a strong indication of the management’s commitment to quality, operational efficiency, customer satisfaction, educational excellence, and continual improvement.
“The implementation of this standard will strengthen the academy’s administrative processes, institutional governance, training delivery systems, and service efficiency,” he said.
Dr Kevin Okonna, the Acting Rector, MAN, said that the certification became necessary to satisfy international standards requirements for admission and training in the industry.
Okonna said that the certifications affirmed the academy’s commitment to consistently provide the merchant navy, maritime industry, and allied industries with high quality education and training. NAN
