Connected Development (CODE), a Non-Governmental Organisation, has donated farming equipment, including recycling stands to students of the Qua Iboe Church Secondary School to help drive environmental solutions.
The organisation made the donation during a one-day Civic Club engagement in the secondary schools in Eket Local Government Area.
The Civic Club is a programme of CODE designed to train secondary school students on transparency, accountability, and community development.
The programme is currently focusing on waste management and the fight against climate change.
Speaking during the donation, Mr Mohammad Gimba, Data Analyst, CODE said that equipment were donated to maintain school gardens and collect plastic waste, which they could recycle and sell to companies and organisations.
“Today, we invited the Civic Club that we have in schools here in Akwa Ibom. It is a club that we created where we train young vibrant students from secondary schools to be part of community change and to be part of the push for transparency and accountability.
“Today, the programme is focusing on waste management and fighting against climate change.
“We have donated some farm tools to be used in their school gardens and we also donated a recycle stand to collect plastic waste, recycle it and then, they can sell it to companies and organisations who are in need of it.
“These students are meant to be ambassadors and we hope that from here these things will be sustained in the school and beyond because the students have been very active in enlightening others in their communities,” he said.
According to him, the students, who are part of the Civic Club, are expected to become ambassadors of change in their communities.
He noted that they have been actively enlightening others about the importance of environmental sustainability and responsible citizenship.
Gimba added that the organisation had tried to involve government officials in its events to encourage adoption and support.
In his remarks, Master Aniebietabasi Etukudo, President of the Civic Club said the programme had a remarkable impact on their life.
“CODE has done a lot in our school by introducing digital literacy and environmental campaigns. From these initiatives we have been able to carry out different projects.
“Civic Club has helped us to know our rights and to be transparent and accountable,” he said.
Participating schools include; Qua Iboe Church Secondary School, Eket, Government Secondary School, Afaha Eket and Noble International School, Eket.
